Πολλά άτομα με αναπηρία, ανάμεσά τους και Παραολυμπιονίκες, κατηγόρησαν την ταινία για έλλειψη ευαισθησία. "Για εμένα, στέλνει το λάθος μήνυμα, ότι πρέπει να φοβόμαστε τους ανθρώπους που τους λείπουν δάχτυλα", δήλωσε ο κωμικός Alex Brooker, σημειώνοντας ότι δεν κατηγορεί την Hathaway για αυτό.

‘Your arm is so scary’ ‘Your arm makes me feel sick’ . . These are just a few comments I received growing up. As a self conscious youngster these comments hurt ALOT and would knock my confidence. Nowadays I just feel sorry for the very ignorant people.🤷‍♀️ . . Seeing this picture from the ‘The Witches’ film made me very confused/upset. Yes you could say it’s great to see someone with a limb difference on TV and more than anything I really want to see more representation in the media. However we want disabilities to to be normalised and be represented in a positive light rather than being associated with being a scary, evil, witch. I know a lot of children and adults who are born missing their fingers and I want them to know that this does not represent you. Your limb difference is not scary. Your difference is unique and beautiful and should be celebrated. . . Some may think that the limb difference community is being over sensitive. But have you lived your life trying to overcome a stigma? . . . I really don’t believe that @warnerbrosuk would have wanted to upset or cause offence but I think maybe a few more discussions should have been had. . More than happy to hear your opinions as I think it’s great to be able to have open discussions about such topics. #notawitch

Σε μια ανάρτησή της στο Instagram, η ηθοποιός αναφέρει πως πρόσφατα έμαθε πως πολλοί άνθρωποι με αυτή την αναπηρία, στεναχωρήθηκαν από τον τρόπο που παρουσιάζεται ο χαρακτήρας που υποδύεται στην ταινία. "Κάνω το καλύτερο που μπορώ για να είμαι ευαίσθητη απέναντι στα αισθήματα και τις εμπειρίες άλλων, όχι από φόβο, αλλά επειδή το να μην πληγώνεις τους άλλους είναι ένα βασικό επίπεδο αξιοπρέπειας για το οποίο θα έπρεπε να αγωνιζόμαστε όλοι. Ως άνθρωπος που πιστεύει στις ίσες ευκαιρίες και πραγματικά απεχθάνεται τη σκληρότητα, σας οφείλω μία συγγνώμη για τον πόνο που προκλήθηκε. Λυπάμαι. Τώρα που ξέρω καλύτερα, υπόσχομαι ότι θα πράξω καλύτερα. Και οφείλω μια ιδιαίτερη συγγνώμη σε όλους όσοι σας αγαπούν όσο δυνατά αγαπώ εγώ τα δικά μου παιδιά: λυπάμαι που απογοήτευσα την οικογένειά σας", έγραψε η Hathaway.

I have recently learned that many people with limb differences, especially children, are in pain because of the portrayal of the Grand High Witch in The Witches. Let me begin by saying I do my best to be sensitive to the feelings and experiences of others not out of some scrambling PC fear, but because not hurting others seems like a basic level of decency we should all be striving for. As someone who really believes in inclusivity and really, really detests cruelty, I owe you all an apology for the pain caused. I am sorry. I did not connect limb difference with the GHW when the look of the character was brought to me; if I had, I assure you this never would have happened. I particularly want to say I’m sorry to kids with limb differences: now that I know better I promise I’ll do better. And I owe a special apology to everyone who loves you as fiercely as I love my own kids: I’m sorry I let your family down.
